Our vision is to establish the Pittsburgh African American Music Museum as the premier destination for showcasing and honoring the extraordinary contributions of African American musicians rooted in Pittsburgh while also serving as a platform for interdisciplinary artistic expression.

Located on historic First Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh, the museum will stand as both a tribute and a beacon honoring the past while inspiring the future. Our mission is grounded in purpose, pride, and preservation, envisioning a thriving cultural corridor where history is not only remembered, but actively experienced.

Here, the stories, sounds, and spirit of Pittsburgh’s African American musicians will be honored as living, breathing forces continuing to shape our city and influence the world. Complementing these musical legacies, the museum will feature rotating visual art installations that reflect the cultural, social, and creative energy of the community.

A Place of Deep Historical Significance

Housed in the iconic Project 14 Building, the museum’s location is both intentional and symbolic. This historic site is deeply woven into the fabric of Pittsburgh’s African American community, having once served as a cornerstone for Black entrepreneurship, culture, and civic life. It is a fitting home for a space dedicated to artistic excellence, resilience, and innovation—past, present, and future.

An Immersive, Living Cultural Experience

The Pittsburgh African American Music Museum is envisioned as a vibrant, immersive experience, one that engages visitors of all ages and backgrounds through thoughtfully curated exhibits, dynamic programming, educational initiatives, live performances, and visual art. Guests will not simply observe history; they will feel it, hear it, and connect with it. In addition to music-focused exhibitions, art will adorn the museum walls through rotating installations spotlighting local and regional artists, including painters, sculptors, illustrators, and multidisciplinary creatives. These rotating galleries will ensure the museum remains a living, evolving space, one that reflects both heritage and contemporary expression.

Through interactive storytelling, powerful musical narratives, and visual art, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the influence African American musicians have had on jazz, soul, R&B, gospel, funk, hip-hop, and beyond—and how these creative forces helped shape social movements, cultural identity, and global music history.

We are proud to announce that the museum will also feature a dedicated Smokey Robinson Exhibit Room, honoring one of music’s most iconic voices and songwriters, whose artistry and influence continue to resonate across generations.
